The inadvertent expat blogger behind Basin Thistle Nest

Hello, I’m Sophie
I’m a project manager, a parent, and an expat living in Zürich, Switzerland.
A few years back I moved here with my family, and what began as a temporary assignment gradually became a new chapter of life abroad.
How It Started
Moving to Switzerland wasn’t part of our long-range plan. Like many relocations for work, it started as a job opportunity and soon grew into something much more significant.
The early months were demanding — learning new systems, adopting fresh routines, and adjusting to new expectations. Ordinary tasks seemed more complex than expected.
The Adjustment Period
We faced culture shock, uncertainty, and a lot of hands-on learning. Yet over time, habits settled in. We found places that suited us, connected with other families, and began building something that felt steady.
Why I Built Basin Thistle Nest
Online sources were mostly corporate relocation tips or shallow travel content. What was missing was an honest, everyday family viewpoint.
This site aims to fill that void — practical guidance drawn from real family life in Switzerland.
What This Site Is (And Isn't)
This site is:
- Hands-on experience from living in Switzerland
- Centered on family life and everyday realities
- Updated whenever there is a meaningful change
This site isn't:
- Not a tourism authority resource
- a sponsored review platform
- Not a generic travel blog
Looking Ahead
Our stay in Switzerland continues, along with the ongoing learning journey. As long as the information remains helpful, I will keep recording what we uncover.
If you have questions about family life in Zürich or anywhere in Switzerland, don't hesitate to get in touch.
Best regards,
Sophie
